Barrister Mainul Hosein in a talk show at Banglavision Television channel said on Thursday night that the regulatory principles of electronic media should have been very good if applied on and followed by the government. It should be for the government to uphold the ideals of Liberation War for making democracy work. But it is the government that does not practice democracy.
It is very insulting to ask journalists to show respect to the Liberation War as if the Liberation War was not ours.
Barrister Mainul further added that the regulatory principles are not for protecting the media but for protecting the government which itself has no democratic basis and the corrupt ones in the government. No allegations of corruption can be made unless truth is established through the court.
The government that has no truthful legal basis, is asking the media people to be truthful.
The media is for exacting accountability of the government and it is not the responsibility of the press to
implement the policy decisions on behalf of the government, Mainul Hosein added.
He said it most emphatically that the army and police are the people’s police and the people’s army so why the people should unnecessarily condemn them. But they are answerable to the people. So it is uncalled-for for the government to tell media people to respect them.
Moderated by Mostafa Firoz the programme was participated by PM’s Press Advisor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, convener of Nagorik Oikkya Mahmudur Rahman Manna and senior journalist Mozammel Hossain Manju.
