The mayors of bifurcated Dhaka City Corporations, Sayeed Khokon and Annisul Haq, at a roundtable on Saturday said that they would work to resolve the waterlogging problem in the capital and take long-term plan in this regard.
We know that the residents of the Dhaka city are suffering immensely due to water logging, particularly during the monsoon. We have already taken some initiatives to resolve the crisis, they said.
They said this at a roundtable titled “Water Logging in Dhaka: Strategies and Solutions” organised by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) at Nagar Bhaban in the city.
Mayor of DSCC Sayeed Khokon said, “Water logging is sadness of the city people. The DSCC is trying to do something to reduce the water logging problem.”
“Waterlogging will be reduced if we work together. I hope that at least 50 per cent water logging will be reduced before the upcoming rainy season,” Khokon said.
Speaking at the roundtable, Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Haq said there are many obstacles in the city corporations. But we have to go forward.
“Waterlogging is a big problem in the city. So-called initiative could not resolve the crisis. We have to form a strong ‘taskforce’ comprising representatives from RAJUK, WASA, experts and civil society.
If we do that definitely we will be succeeded,” he said.
Annisul Haq said, “Every citizen of Dhaka city wants an ‘ideal city.’ Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also wants to build Dhaka as the city of the beauty. She is ready to allocate adequate budget to make it livable. So we need a long-term and sustainable plan to change the city.”
Professor Mujibur Rahman of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) presented a keynote paper on “Water Logging” at the roundtable while Deputy Managing Director of Dhaka WASA SDM Quamrul Alam, Joint-Secretary General of BAPA Sculptor Iqbal Habib and Additional Chief Engineer of PWD Azizul Haque also presented papers on the occasion.
Professor AKM Badruzzaman of BUET, Urban Planner and former Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) Professor Nazrul Islam, Engineer MA Awal, President of Bangladesh Institute of Planners Golam Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of DSCC Ansar Ali and Engineer Taskim A Khan spoke at the programme, among others.
