Chittagong Bureau :
Amid ongoing protests, Chittagong City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin is sticking to his guns over raising the holding tax on city dwellers and building owners.Last year, the city corporation introduced a new rule, according to which taxes will assessed on the basis of rent of an establishment.
The mayor had then said they will adopt a ‘zero-tolerance’ on the issue. But taxpayers have been demanding a return to the old system of tax based on per square foot of a structure.
At a press conference on Wednesday, a taxpayers’ forum gave the city corporation a month’s ultimatum to meet the demand and threatened agitations, including shutdowns.Speaking at a programme of distributing bins for garbage collection on Friday, Mayor Nasir once again made it clear he was adamant on the issue. “Those who are wealthy and capable must pay holding tax because that brings funds to the city corporation to serve the people,” he said but he said “The poor people will not be forced.”
In March 2016, the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC), during its ‘Five-yearly Tax Evaluation Programme,’ said building and house owners will have to pay 17 percent holding tax on the rent they get.
The CCC has already started the process to assess holding taxes in line with the new rule Mayor Nasir, whose electoral pledges included not raising the taxes, now says that it’s the government’s call and he is only complying with local government ministry’s ordinance.
