The Local Government Division on Wednesday suspended Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, now in jail custody in connection with the former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria murder case.
“Since the court accepted his name in the chargesheet of a criminal case, he
(Ariful Haque) has been suspended following the Local Government (City Corporation) Act,” additional secretary of the Local Government Division Ashok Madhav Roy told UNB.
On December 30, a Habiganj court sent SCC mayor and BNP central leader Ariful Haque Chowdhury to jail, rejecting his bail prayers in the Kibria murder case.
Earlier on December 21, the court accepted the supplementary chargesheet filed against 35 people, including Ariful, by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police in connection with the killing of five people, including Shah AMS Kibria.
