Redwanul Azad Rana and Abu Taher, suspected mastermind behind the killings of bloggers Ahmed Rajeeb Haider, Avijit Roy and Washiqur Rahman, might have fled the country.
Intelligence agencies, including detective branch (DB) of Police, is yet to trace the whereabouts of the ‘killers’, sources said.
Even, the detectives could not arrest the suspects even after announcing bounty to arrest Redwanul Azad Rana, the mastermind killer of
Avijit and Rajeeb. Rana is believed to be a key leader of Ansarullah Bangla Team, they claimed.
But, Taher, suspected for masterminding the killing of blogger Washiqur, is still traceless even after alerting the police at border posts and other exit points at various ports, Police Headquarter sources said.
“According to available information and evidence we have got, Rana has already left the country,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said.
Rana had escaped from the country with the help of some international militancy organizations, the DB official said.
Ansarullah Bangla Team having links with banned Hizb ut-Tahrir, JMB and Huji wants to establish ‘Islamic Bangladesh’ through jihad, following the path of international terrorist groups Taliban and al-Qaeda, the detective official claimed.
Another high official of the police, said on condition of anonymity, Rana had flown to Australia around two weeks after the killing of Avijit at Dhaka University campus on February 26.
According to DB police, former North South University student Rana coordinated the attack on Avijit and his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya.
DB Additional Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam said that they raided some madrasas to detain Taher.
On March 15, the DMP declared Tk 5 lakh bounty for people who will help police detain Rana or give information about his hideout.
The DB police also issued letters to Immigration Police and other land port authorities in this regard.
Police suspect that Rana, who leads a good number of Ansarullah activists, might have connection in the killing of Washiqur Rahman.
Earlier, blogger Ahmed Rajeeb Haider was killed by assailants in the city’s Mirpur area on February 15 of 2013.
