The Christian community of the country, as elsewhere across the world, will celebrate Christmas today, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.Christmas, the biggest religious festival of the Christian community, is a celebration of rebirth, new beginning, forgiveness and peace, and renewing relationship with God and humans.According to Christian belief, God appeared on earth through his son, Jesus Christ, on this day.It is one of the most important days of the year for Christians, who will hold special prayers in churches.The celebrations start on the eve of the day with singing of carols in public places like lobbies, restaurants and lounges. Marking the carnival, Christians will offer special prayers at the churches.The prayer houses and adjoining areas have already been decorated with colourful tiny blinking lights. Illuminated Christmas trees have been placed with a star standing right on top. Santa Claus will hand out Christmas gifts to the children on the occasion. Different luxurious hotels in the capital have already decorated their premises with Christmas trees, goodies and fairy lights.Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and police will provide security in churches and adjoining areas to ensure the day remains a peaceful one.The day is a public holiday.President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have issued separate messages greeting members of the Christian community on the occasion.In his message, the President said “Jesus Christ is one of the greatest men of the world who came in different ages to lead the mankind towards the path of welfare and truth.”He urged all to get united to build up a happy and non-communal Bangladesh.The Prime Minister, in her message, said “Establishing peace and justice in the world was one of the vows of Jesus Christ. Great Jesus Christ sacrificed his life for the hapless and hungry people.”Khaleda Zia, in her message, said the greatest Jesus Christ had inspired his followers to establish truth and justice.Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar along with private TV channels and radio stations will broadcast special programmes while national dailies will publish supplements highlighting the significance of the day.President Abdul Hamid will accord a reception to the members of Christian community at Bangabhaban at 11:45 am on the occasion.
