Massive schemes taken to boost Boro cultivation in Gaibandha, Narsingdi

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has taken a massive programme for boosting the cultivation of Boro paddy in six upazilas of the district this season.
According to DAE sources, a total of 55,300 hectares of land have been fixed for cultivating Boro Paddy in the district this season. Of the total lands, 54300 hectares of land will be cultivated under high yielding variety (HYV) of paddy and 1000 hectares under local variety.
Deputy Director of DAE, Narsingdi Shovan Kumar Dhar told BSS that farmers of the district are now busy preparing seed bed and lands for transplanting the seedlings in short period of time. He said there is no shortage of Boro seedling in the district.
Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) so far distributed 1,230 tonnes Boro seeds among the farmers in the district. He said Boro cultivation will be continuing up to second week of February.
The Deputy Director said if there is no climate hazard about 200,000 tonnes of Boro rice are expected to be produced in the district this season. He said the local DAE provided the farmers with logistic support including seeds, fertilizers and necessary equipment.
Besides, Bangladesh Krishi Bank, Sonali Bank, Janata Bank, Agrani Bank and BRDB is distributing short term crop loan to the farmers of the district.
BSS from Gaibandha adds: Seedbeds are being prepared by the farmers to develop healthy Boro paddy seedlings in all the seven upazilas of the district this season.
Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set a target to prepare seedbed on 6,168 hectares of land to produce Boro paddy seedlings to farm as many as 1,25,500 hectares of land here during the current Boro season with the production target of 5,06,000 tonnes of rice, sources said.
Now, the farmers are so much busy in preparing the seedbed on low lands.
To fulfill the target, high quality seeds of Boro paddy like BRRI Dhan-28 BRRI Dhan-29, BRRI Dhan-50 and BRRI Dhan-58 are being distributed to the farmers at reasonable rates through BADC and other private firms approved by Seed Certification Agency of the government.
Besides, a lot of farmers have taken preparations to make seedbeds by sowing their own seeds, not depending on BADC and local markets as they received training on seed preservation from the field level officials, said Showkat Osman, district training officer of the DAE.
The DAE officials advised the farmers to buy seeds from BADC and government approved dealers to get desired output, sources said.
Talking to the BSS, deputy director of DAE Krishibid Masudur Rahman said the field level sub assistant agriculture officers were instructed to motivate the farmers to collect healthy seeds from BADC and government approved dealers.
