The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken massive programme to cultivate winter vegetables in all ten upazila of the district during the current winter season.
The DAE sources said under the programme, a total of 4,500 hectares of land would be brought under the cultivation with the production target of 81,000 tonnes of winter vegetables.
DAE office sources said the district which is popularly known as “grain bowel” of the country also a suitable place for producing huge vegetables including cabbage, cauliflower, tomato, bean, radish, carrot, guard, bottle guard, cucumber, brinjal and pea during the winter season.
Many farmers of the district have started showing their keen interest to bring their more farm lands under vegetable farming as they could easily get better yielding rate of the vegetables by reducing their production costs side by side with earning much profits, the sources said.
Deputy Director of DAE Samir Kumar Sarker said the field workers of the DAE have started rendering their field-level service to let the vegetable cultivators know about the modern methods of vegetable cultivation for achieving best yielding rate of the vegetables through lower production costs.
