Staff Reporter :To mark the historic March 7, the ruling Awami League (AL) will hold a massive rally and display its strength against what it termed 20-party alliance’s sponsored terrorism at Suhrawardy Udyan in city today (Saturday). The Day will be observed today in capital and elsewhere in the country also to pay tributes to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.Prime Minister and AL President Sheikh Hasina will address the rally as chief guest. The rally will begin at 3pm. Besides, AL and its associate bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes to mark the day with a befitting manner. The programmes of the day include hoisting of the national and party flags and placing floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi in the city.Relief and Disaster Management Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya on Friday termed the March 7 as country’s prestige, saying it would be the biggest ever rally. “March 7 our prestige. And we will have to keep hold our prestige. We want to break the record of 7 March public meeting as we expect it will be the biggest ever one,” he said while speaking at an extended meeting of AL at party central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the city.A senior AL leader said in the wake of widespread violence, the prime minister is expected to give important directions to her party leaders and workers on the day.On this day in 1971, Bangabandhu made a clarion call to the people to fight against the Pakistani occupation forces to liberate the country.Before a mammoth rally at the then Race Course Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan) Bangabandhu had declared, “Ebarer sangram amader muktir sangram, ebarer sangram swadhinatar sangram (Our struggle this time is the struggle for independence, our struggle this time is the struggle for liberation).”Bangabandhu’s historic address on March 7 had mobilised the whole nation to wage an all-out non-cooperation movement against the Pak army to achieve independence.
