Mass-signature campaign to save Sundarbans

UNB, Dhaka :Biggyan Andolon Mancha, a citizens’ platform, on Friday launched a countrywide mass-signature campaign to save the Sundarbans from ‘destructive’ development activities.Prof Dr Anu Mohammad inaugurated the campaign in front of the Jatiya Press Club.The campaign was launched to press home their several demands, including a ban on the plying of commercial vessels and the construction of coal-fired power plant at Rampal upazila in Bagerhat, to protect the Sundarbans.The platform also urged the government to take stern action against those who are responsible for the huge oil spill in the Sundarbans last month.Speaking on the occasion, member secretary of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resource, Power and Port (Oil-Gas Committee) Prof Anu Mohammad alleged that the Sundarbans has been pushed to the brink of destruction due to various destructive activities and negligence by the government.He urged the government to take necessary steps to save the world’s largest mangrove, also a world heritage site. The campaign is aimed at collecting at least one lakh signature in favour of the demands and will continue it till the 1st half of January.Oil-Gas Committee convener Engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah and senior ournalist Abu Sayeed Khan were present on the occasion.
