Bangladesh ODI Captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza on Sunday collected a nomination paper from Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader to contest in the upcoming 11th parliamentary election from Narail-2 constituency.
Mashrafe went to Dhanmondi Office of AL to collect the form at 1:30pm.
Obaidul Quader told the reporters, although Mashrafe is joining the politics, it will have no adverse impact on his cricket career.
Mashrafe met Prime Minister and President of Awami League Sheikh Hasina to seek her blessings before collecting the nomination form.
Mashrafe went to the Ganobhaban around 11:30am, PMO sources said.
Thereafter Mashrafe went to Awami League office at Dhanmondi.
Mashrafe, apart from being the captain of the ODI team, has undertaker various welfare projects at his home town in Narail.
He established an organisation called the ‘Narail Express Foundation’ last year for development work in the area.
On Saturday, it was circulated on the media that Bangladesh National Team cricketers Mashrafe Mortaza and Shakib Al Hasan would collect nomination papers on Sunday to contest in the upcoming general election with Awami League ticket from Narail and Magura respectively.
But, Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan refrained from collecting nomination papers.
Shakib met with Awami League President Sheikh Hasina on Saturday night. She advised him to continue playing cricket for now.
Obaidul Quader told reporters that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has advised all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan not to contest in the upcoming parliamentary election, but, to give full attention to cricket.
She asked Shakib to pay more attention to the matches as the cricket world Cup would be held next year; Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, quoted Sheikh Hasina as saying.
On Friday, the ruling Awami League started selling the party’s nomination papers for the 11th general election.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader inaugurated the sale of nomination forms at AL president’s Dhanmondi political office with the purchase of a nomination paper on behalf of the party President Sheikh Hasina.
