Dhaka Mariner Youngs Club emerged the champions in the Club Cup Hockey defeating Dhaka Abahani Limited by three goals to nil in the final at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium on Saturday.
Earlier, Dhaka Abahani Limited clinched the previous title of the Club Cup Hockey for two consecutive times but their target of earning the Club Cup Hockey title for three times (hat-trick) went in vain as the Arambagh-based outfit became the champions.
Mariners dominated most of the time of the match. Abahani and Mariners had a tight tussle in the first 15 minutes.
Abahani got the first chance in the seventh minute of the play. Parampreet Singh got the ball from a pass of his teammate Belimaga Bahran in the Mariners’ D-box but Singh failed to struck the ball into the blank net.
After two minutes, Mariners’ Indian recruit Shawdeep Singh missed their first chance.
Mariners another Indian recruit Abhishek’s power-packed shot passed away the goal bar.
Abahani got penalty corner in the 14th minute but their players failed to utilize their chance.
Mariners scored the first goal in the 22nd minute when Sohanur Rahman Sabuj struck the ball into the goal bar using a pass of his teammate Milon Hossain.
In the 52nd minute, Bahran’s shot found the net but the umpires cancelled the goal after watching the decision of Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Mariners’ Indian recruit Abhishek doubled the margin by a reverse hit in the 55th minute of the clash.
Sohanur Rahman sealed the fate of the match by a placing shot using a pass of his teammate Fazle Rabbi in the 58th minute of the match.
After the final match, President of Bangladesh Hockey Federation and Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan distributed the prizes among the winners as the chief guest, while Managing Director of Social Islami Bank Limited Kazi Osman Ali and development partner of the meet Executive Director of Walton Group FM Iqbal Bin Anwar Dawn were present as special guests. The officials of Bangladesh Hockey Federation were present at the time.
