Govt initiative sought: Marine eco-system collapses

Endangered species like dolphin, whale, shark and turtle are dying randomly in the Bay of Bengal following collapse in marine eco-system. There is no government initiative apparently to protect them, sources said.
The sea species are being lost in numbers due to the mechanized fishing boats and trawlers. The boats usually use drift, gill and fixed gill nets which entangle predators and consequently cause to death.
By using excluder device in nets, it can reduce incidental bycatch and mortality of the species. But no Bangladeshi fishing vessel uses the device, they said.
A study conducted by Save Our Sea (SOS), a marine research organization says, ecosystem is based on two entities. One is living things and another is non-living things. Living things are plants, human being, animals and insects. And non-living things are land, water, temperature, air, rock and solar energy. Non-living things are affected when living things are lost. In this context, there are some cycles in ecosystem like Oxygen, Hydrologic, Nitrogen, Phosphate and Biogeochemical.
The coastal zone of Bangladesh has been affected by tidal fluctuations and salinity; and risk for cyclone and storm surges in the absence of justification
of eco-system, the SOS said. Considering present scenario and status of Bangladesh’s coastal and marine ecosystems, the priority targets are restoring of the marine and coastal ecosystems, science based management for sustainable marine fisheries, SOS added.
SOS suggests that community led action researches through genetic population studies are necessary for the process. Most importantly killing of the sea turtles should be considered as a serious wildlife crime and handled accordingly.
Turtles are the sign of healthy sea and healthy fishing grounds. This message should be relayed to the fishermen until the last member of the community understands what it does mean, it said.
Major (Rtd) Saad Mahmood, researcher of SOS told the New Nation on Friday, “Fishermen believe that entanglement of a predator in the fishing net is an evil omen. They do not let them live.”
“To store the eco-system, we have to make the local people conscious about the healthy sea means healthy planet,” he said.
Dr Anisuzzaman Khan, Chairman of World Biodiversity said, Bio-diversity Act-2012 does not apply in this regard. As a result marine eco-system has collapsed for not proper supervision by the environment ministry and not having the proper education of coast people about eco-system.
