Staff Reporter :
The High Court on Thursday granted bail to Nagorik Oikyo Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna in a case filed on charge of provoking the armed forces to topple the government.
The HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by Manna.
But, Manna was not released as a sedition case is pending against him, Deputy Attorney General Md Bashirullah said.
The case was filed with Gulshan Police Station on
February 25, 2015 bringing charges against him of instigating the armed forces.
Manna was arrested on February 25 last year, a day after his telephone conversations with BNP leader Sadeque Hossain Khoka about strengthening the anti-government movement, among many issues, were leaked.
On March 5 last year, Gulshan police sued Manna for sedition. In one conversation, Manna, also former organising secretary of the ruling Awami League, was heard talking to Khoka and the other call was reportedly made to an unknown person. During this conversation, the man asked Manna if he would like to sit with top army officers to talk about bringing a changeover in the country.
Advocate Idrisur Rahman and Dr Shahdeen Malik represented Manna in the court and Deputy Attorney General Md Bashirullah stood for the state.
