The 52nd death anniversary of the legendary journalist Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia will be observed in many parts of the country in a befitting manner today.
On this day in 1969, Manik Mia, the epitome of democracy, a relentless fighter for the cause of Bengali nationalism and founder editor of the Daily Ittefaq, breathed his last at the age of 58.
Manik Mia was also the founder of The New Nation.
Programmes of the day include Quran khwani, milad mahfils and feeding the poor at his grave site, offices, orphanages and residences of his family members.
Meanwhile, different organisations have taken up elaborate programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner. On the occasion, Independent Newspapers Readers Association will organise a programme titled “Great Liberation War: Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia and the contribution of the Daily Ittefaq” at Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday where Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud will be present as the chief guest.
Manik Mia and his Ittefaq were literally engaged in a relentless pen-war to form public opinion in favour of the mass struggle during the Pakistan period. His editorial Rajnoitik Moncho (The Political Stage) had made a remarkable wave in political arena during pro-people movements.
