One mango laden engine boat sinks in the Bay on way to Sandwip island on Saturday evening . The boat was going to Sandwip from Kumiraghat of Sitakkunda upazila with mango cargo in the evening .
The fate of the boatmen and others yet to be ascertained by the local administration till filing this report. Local sources said the boat was carrying 10 tons of mango consists of 200 cartoons of 50 kgs each. Sitakunda police sources said the boat sailed from Kumira ghat at about 3 pm alongwith mango cargo and 50-60 home bound commuters but the boat sank in the middle way towards Sandwip . Another local sources said seven boat passengers were rescued immediately by a speed boat .
Sources said the engine boat belong to District council of Chittagong and it has been operating by some locals taking lease from the authority. This trawler boat is usually used in carrying the passengers from Kumira to Sandwip and vice versa.
Sitakunda UNO office sources said there was no passengers other than mango cargo and five boat men and these boatmen safely rescued and now staying in Sandwip. While contacted Sandwip thana police could not give any information about the sunken engine boat but on sensing the news of sinking, police force was sent to Kumira ghat.
