Somewhere in the last decade, however, the traditional black boot has almost gone the way of the dodo. The world’s top players routinely boast footwear in bright and brash colours, while we have also seen designs featuring lions, camouflage and 3D patterns. We probably hit peak ridiculousness when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang wore a $4,000 diamond-encrusted pair of cleats that weren’t even suitable for kicking a ball.
