A court in Meherpur on Monday sentenced a man and his first wife to death for killing his second in Sadar upazila of the district in 2010.
The condemn convicts are Saidul Islam, a resident of Jadabpur village in the upazila and his first wife Jamila Khatun.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Ripti Kumar Biswas handed down the verdict at about 11:00am. The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each and acquitted three others as their guilt was not proved.
According to the prosecution, Saidul alongwith Jamila killed his first wife Jarina on January 31, 2010, and buried the body in a vegetable field.
On February 6, being informed by local farmers, police recovered the body.
Later, Jarina’s sister Ferdous Khatun filed a case with Meherpur Sadar Police Station against five people.
After examining witnesses and records, the court pronounced the verdict, additional public prosecutor Kazi Shahidul Haque confirmed.
