A man was killed while eight others injured in a clash over a land-related dispute between two rival groups in Bayampur village of Kanaighat upazila on Thursday morning.
The deceased was Faruk Ahmed, 42, son of late Asad Raza of the village.
There had been a longstanding dispute between Faruk and Islam Uddin of the same village over the ownership of a piece of land there, said Md Abdul Ahad, officer-in-charge of Kanaighat Police Station.
The clash ensued between the groups in the morning as Faruk along with his family members obstructed Islam and his associates from cultivating the disputed land.
At one stage, both the groups equipped with homemade weapons swooped on each other that left nine people injured, the OC said.
The injured were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared Faruk dead.
The body was sent to hospital morgue of an autopsy, the OC added.
