Customs officials in a raid seized 24 gold bars weighing 2.78 kilograms worth around Tk 1.30 crore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) on Saturday.
They also arrested a passenger of local flight Regent Airways on charge of carrying the gold bars by dodging the law enforcing agencies.
The detained man is Sarwar Kamal from Cox’s Bazar.
“In a random checking, the officials found the gold bars inside his shoes when he was crossing the domestic terminal, said HM Ahsanul Kabir, Assistant Commissioner of Customs.
Sarwar claimed that he brought the gold from Chittagong, but officials suspected that an international passenger carried gold bars from Oman and handed those to him during his Chittagong to Dhaka trip to dodge the comparatively relax checking on the domestic terminal, he said.
“We are investigating the situation,” the customs official said, adding that a case was filed with the Airport Police Station in this connection, he said.
