A man arrested in connection with a narcotics case died in police custody in Chapainawabganj after his arrest on Thursday night.
The deceased’s brother has brought allegations of torture by police. But police have denied the allegation.
The deceased was identified as Sanaul Haque Biswas, 44, of Chanshikari village of Bholahat upazila of the district.
The victim’s younger brother Masud Rana Biswas said police arrested
Sanaul from in front of Sadar hospital on Thursday night when he went out to buy eggs.
Masud said his brother was tortured by police and he died because of the torture. The deceased left behind his wife and four daughters, he said. Masud also said his brother was a drug addict but he was not involved in any drug business.
AHM Abdur Rakib, superintendent of police (SP) of the district said, Sanaul was wanted in a narcotics case. Police recovered 160 bottles of phensidy from his house on April 14 and filed a narcotics case against him that very day.
After the case, he fled the area. Later after gathering information, a team of DB police conducted a drive at Chanshikari village on Thursday night, AHM Abdur Rakib said. Sensing presence of Detective Branch officials, Sanaul tried to run away but police managed to arrested him, the SP said.
After the arrest, the accused complained of chest pain. Police then took him to Bholahat upazila health complex, the SP said.
The doctors of the hospital referred Sanaul to Sadar hospital after providing him primary treatment. He was admitted at the hospital where he died, the SP added.
He denied the allegation of torture and said they primarily suspect Sanaul died of a heart attack.
