Man accused of stabbing SI killed in ‘gunfight’

A man accused of stabbing a Sub-Inspector (SI) of Police recently was killed in an alleged gunfight with the Detective Branch (DB) personnel at Gouripur in Mymensingh district early Wedneday.
The deceased has been identified as Ujjal Mia, 28, a suspected drug peddler and an accused in a case of stabbing SI Asaduzzaman Asad, said Ashiqur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the district.
 “Police raided a house on Shaikh Siraj Road at Gouripur to arrest Ujjal based on a tip. A skirmish ensued when Ujjal and his cohorts opened fire and hurled bombs at them. Ujjal was hit by a bullet when we fired in self-defence. Later Ujjal was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College and Hospital (MMCH)where on-duty doctors declared him dead,” the DB official said.
MMCH emergency medical officer Dr Ashesh Kumar Roy said Ujjal had died before he was brought to the hospital. “He had a gunshot wound in left side of his chest,” Ashesh said.
Gouripur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Delowar Ahmed denied having any knowledge about the gunfight.
On March 27, Ujjal attacked SI Asaduzzaman with a knife in the Old Jail area of Gauripur upazila, police said. A case has been filed over the incident.
