Mamata due today; Modi tomorrow

Sagar Biswas :Indian Premier Narendra Modi will arrive in Dhaka tomorrow [Saturday] in a two-day visit with a view to intensifying bilateral cooperation ever since the Awami League, under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was reelected in 2014.The Pan Pacific Sonargoan Hotel is booked for Modi’s entourage. Some official programmes including the state dinner hosted by Sheikh Hasina will be held there. On the other hand, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is arriving in Dhaka today [Friday]. She is expected to land Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the evening. She will check-in at Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel. She will go back next day after the Land Boundary Agreement [LBA] is signed in presence of Hasina and Modi, Foreign Ministry sources said. Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque has said that trade and connectivity would get highest priority during Modi’s visit. “Dozens of instruments including agreements and MoUs on energy cooperation, connectivity and transit will be signed during the visit,” he said. India has already been announced that the Teesta water sharing treaty will not be signed during Modi’s visit.However, with the resolution of the LBA, the two countries will give focus on addressing the rampant criminal activities along the border, including the smuggling of arms and fake currency, trafficking of women and children and also the long-standing issue of export of cattle from India.Diplomatic sources said, Modi can be expected to also raise the issue of undocumented Bangladeshi migration into India. Bangladesh government although said that there is no illegal migration into India.Meanwhile, the senior officials of Dhaka Metropolitan Police [DMP] on Thursday sat in a close-door meeting to ensure foolproof security during Modi’s visit. The meeting discussed overall security arrangement, traffic control and movement of vehicles on different city roads. All the DCs. ADCs, ACs and OCs under the jurisdictions of DMP were present at the meeting, official sources said.DMP Joint Commissioner [Operation] Mir Rezaul Alam said, “The visiting spots of Modi from airport to Gulshan, Ganobhaban to Bangabhaban, Savar Mausoleum and some other places have been brought under high security arrangements.”He said, “Apart from police teams, the squads of DB and other intelligence agencies in plainclothes will be posted in these areas. The traffic department, crime scene department and protection department will work in a coordinated way.”  The Indian security teams would work separately. One advance team already arrived in Dhaka and another team would come with Modi, he added. According to programme, Modi will arrive boarding a special flight of Indian Air Force at HSIA at about 10:00am where Sheikh Hasina will receive him. A smart contingent of armed forces would give guard of honour to Indian Premier. Modi will go to Savar Mausoleum by car and place floral wreath to the war heroes. He is scheduled to visit a garment factory at Savar. He will then go to Dhanmondi to visit Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. Later, he will return to Sonargaon Hotel. He will meet Bangladesh Foreign Minister Mahmood Ali and after that he will go to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Office to sit in a bilateral meeting.On June 7, he will go to Dhakeshwari Temple and Ramakrishna Mission. He will inaugurate an office of Indian High Commission at Baridhara. After having lunch, he will meet President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban, according to officials.
