Maldives got off to a flying start in the 4th Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament beating Cambodia by 3-2 goals in their first match at the Shams-Ul-Huda Stadium in Jessore on Monday.
The first half of the match was locked in 2-2. Hassan Naiz scored two goals and adjudged man of the match while Abdullah Ahmed scored another goal for the youthful Maldives.
Vandeth Son and Dina Tit scored one goal each for the Cambodian.
Ismail put the Maldives ahead in the 6th minute, 1-0.
Vandeth Son leveled the margin for Cambodia in the 15th minute, 1-1. Hassan Naiz restored the lead for Maldives in the 38th minute, 2-1.
Dina Tit scored the equalizer for Cambodia in the stopgap time of the first half, 2-2.
Hassan Naiz sealed the win for Maldives scoring his second and team’s third goal in the 79th minute, 3-2.
With this result Maldives earned three points to be the table topper in Group-B.
On Tuesday’s match, Group-A table topper cum host Bangladesh will face defending champion Malaysia at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka while Nepal to face Sri Lanka at the same venue on the day.
