M.A. Awal, Narsingdi :
Handloom and power loom industries in the district are on the verge of closure due to price -hike of thread and other raw materials of pit and power loom. About 10000 weavers and workers are unemployed and nearly 50 percent handloom and power loom remain inoperative.
Narsingdi district specially Sadar and Raipura upazila are famous for producing different artistic sarees like Jamdani, Katan and Bruket. Besides, different lungi, saree, bedcover , Napkin, tywl and mosquito nets also being produced here. The major production areas of the district are Rasulpur, Karimpur, Jitrampur, Algi, Chawla, Hajipur, Satirpara, Bhagdi, Patchdona and Madobdee areas. Now production of Jamdani, Katan, Bruket and bedcover factories declined alarmingly and about 50 percent of these looms are closed.
Entrepreneurs of Jamdani, Katan and bruket sarees said the problem aggravated due to high price of yarn and dye and unhindered smuggling of Indian sarees, lungi and bedseet and other cloth are coming in our country relentlessly and price of these Indian items are comparatively low then the rate of our country’s loom production.
Indian Sarees and longi are more charm then our country’s product. As a resent demand for traditional Jamdani and Katan saries are decreasing day by day consisting miseries to the weavers. The owners of hand loom and power loom are loosing capital and they lost their interest for running factories
