Malaysia resumes calling visa application

Bangladeshi workers who are keen to go to Malaysia can apply through online now as the country has withdrawn its suspension of submitting the application.
Malaysian Human Resource Minister M. Saravanan on Tuesday said it in a statement that foreign workers can apply now through online for calling visa as the suspension has been withdrawn.
Earlier on August 5, Malaysian Human Resource Minister said that they had suspended the visa application from August 14 to 31 due to renovation work of the online systems.
In the Tuesday’s statement, M. Saravanan said that the Malaysian government had withdrawn the suspension of accepting application for visa.
“Foreign workers can apply now using online portal from Friday (August 19). The government has formed a committee comprising 15 officials from industrial ministry and 5 officers from human resource department,” the statement said.
Malaysia suspended hiring Bangladeshi workers on September 1, 2018 over widespread allegations of malpractice in the recruitment process and charging higher costs from labourers by recruitment agencies through middlemen.
In the wake of chronic shortage of workers, especially in the plantation, agriculture and manufacturing industries due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysia government initiated recruiting workers from foreign countries including Bangladesh.
As Malaysia transitions into the endemic stage, borders have reopened and more foreign workers are welcomed in the country.
In December19 last year, Malaysia and Bangladesh signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the recruitment of Bangladeshi workers, effective for five years till December 2026.
Bangladeshis have been going to Malaysia for jobs since 1978. The South-East Asian country is now hosting around 0.8 million Bangladeshi workers. Malaysia is the third-largest source of remittance for Bangladesh.
