13 lakh mosquito nets to be given: Malaria prevention program at hill dists

The Department of Health has kept 13 lakh pieces of Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Net (LLIN) ready for distribution to prevent malaria in the hill districts.
The number of malaria attacked patients in 2011, 2012 and 2013 was 29518, 26811 and 51795 patients respectively. The number of malaria patients increased to 57480 in 2014. Following the increase of the malaria patients, the prevention programme has been intensified, said Professor Abul Khair Mohammad Shamsuzzaman, Director, Disease Control and Line Director, Communicable Disease Control.
Abul Khair disclosed it while addressing a press conference at the MIS Bhaban in the office of the Directorate General of Health Services on Thursday.
He, however, said that the health workers had been able to diagnose the disease quickly for giving them treatment despite increase of malaria patients. The programme has been successful to cure 97 percent of the malaria affected people.
The press conference was also attended, among others, by MA Faiz, former Director General of Health Services, Dr Ridwanur Rahman, Head of the Medicine Department, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, Dr Abu Naim Mohammad Sohel, Evaluator, National Malaria Control Programme, and Dr Mohammad Moktadir Kabir, Senior Programme Manager, BRAC Malaria Control Programme.
Dr Jahirul Karim, Deputy Programme Manager, Malaria Control Programme, presented the keynote paper on Malaria prevention scenario of the country.

the press conference on the occasion of the World Malaria Day tomorrow (Saturday).
Dr Jahirul Karim said that the number of patients increased mainly due to the recurrent rainfalls in 2014 in the malaria-prone districts. He mentioned that Sherpur, Mymensingh, Netrokona, Kurigram, Sylhet, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Chittagong, Khagrachhari, Rangamati, Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar are malaria prone districts.
Twenty-one non-governmental organisations including BRAC, are implementing the National Malaria Control Programme. The programme also targets to completely eradicate the disease and deaths from malaria by 2020.
The National Malaria Control Programme, BRAC and other partner organisations will organise different activities to observe World Malaria Day 2015 on April 25. A special talk show on BTV will be telecast. Parades, folk songs and discussion sessions will be arranged on the occasion.
