Make Parliament effective to make democracy stronger

Speakers at a programme said effective Parliament with active participation by the members of the ruling party and the opposition can make democracy stronger.
Active role of the opposition can also ensure accountability of the government and it is
the responsibility of the government to ensure presence of the opposition in Parliament, they added.
They also urged the government to ensure job for every citizen to make self-reliant.
They said this at a mock youth Parliament on ‘Right to Work’ arranged by Oxfam at the senate building on Wednesday on Dhaka University campus.
While Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament Advocate Fazley Rabbi Mia said, the opposition can always disagree with the ruling party in Parliament, but the line of reasoning has to be constructive.
‘In the mock debate, it was evident that both the parties wanted Parliament to be effective, something that should also be reflected in our national politics,’ he added.
Bangladesh could not attain stability and desired development in all sectors, including education, as democracy in the country could not proceed uninterrupted.
Former Food and Disaster Management Minister Abdur Razzak has observed that the present government has taken the charge of the country with scores of problems ‘created due to misrule during the regime of BNP and that is why the government has to give special attention to every sector to put things straight.
Communist Party of Bangladesh’s President Mujahidul Islam Selim said, Parliament is the focal point of all activities where both the government and the opposition have equal responsibilities.
It is the responsibility of the opposition to make the government’s activities accountable so that the ruling party fulfils its pledges, he said. As debate is a big part of national Parliament, this competition will surely produce capable member of Parliaments and Speakers in the future, he added.
