PM to authorities: Make Kaliakoir Hi-Tech Park an ICT city

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday directed the authorities concerned to construct Kaliakoir Hi-Tech
Park turn it into a full-fledged ICT city, giving due importance to environmental aspects.
The Prime Minister gave the directive while presiding over the first meeting of the Board of Governors of Bangladesh Hi Tech Park Authority at her office. After the meeting, Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.
He said, the Kaliakoir Hi-Tech Park is being constructed under PPP (public-private partnership) model.
During the meeting, Sheikh Hasina asked the authorities to ensure a world-class investment environment in the hi-tech park, being constructed on 355 acres of land as per a government decision taken in 1999. And 232 acres have been divided into five blocks.
Hasina said, she wants to see the Kaliakoir ICT Park as a full-fledged ICT village, as her government has set a target to generate employment opportunities for 10 lakh people and export earnings of USD 5 billion from the ICT sector across the country.
Spelling out the government mission and vision to develop the country as a middle-income one, the Prime Minister said the hi-tech park would
ensure a global standard investment climate in addition to creating employment opportunities. Managing Director of Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority Hosne Ara Begum made a presentation on the progress of the implementation of the hi-tech parks and villages across the country.
She said, the Kaliakoir hi-tech park would create one lakh jobs.
A three-storey administrative building and a 4.27-km internal road has already been constructed at Kaliakoir. Besides, a power substation and 2.5-kilometer HT line, fibre optic connection, telephone exchange and boundary wall of the park has been completed, the MD said.
