Speakers at a programme in the city on Friday urged the government to take effective steps to make Dhaka a dust and smoke-free city.
They came up with the demand while addressing a cycle rally which was arranged to create awareness among people to keep Dhaka clean and make it a dust and smoke- free city.
The rally was jointly organised by Paribaesh Banchao Andolon (POBA), Environmental Science Department of Stamford University of Bangladesh, Janauddog and Bangladesh Cycle Lane Bastobayon Parishod in front of the National Museum.
Professor of Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Dhaka University Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique said,
“We have to build the city a green one where the next generation can grow up in a healthy environment.” He also said to reduce smoke and keep the city’s air fresh cycle use should be encouraged and separate cycles lane have to be constructed which can help building a healthy and clean city.
Dr. Enamul Haq, a cultural personality, said people want a livable place and they have to obey civic norms such as keeping their surroundings clean. POBA president Abu Naser Khan, the head of Environmental Science Department of Stamford University of Bangladesh Dr. Kamruzzaman Majumder addressed the programme while the Vice-Chancellor of Stamford University Professor Mohammad Ali Naqi presided over it.
