Major roads in port city ravaged by recent floods

The continuous rains for several days and floods ravaged maximum roads in port city. According to the sources, vehicles cannot run on the roads in the port city Chittagong as the condition of roads turned the worst. Most of the roads and alleys in the port city have become unfit for traffic due to cracks and potholes, causing sufferings to the pedestrians, commuters as well as the drivers.
The condition of roads is being so worst to run the vehicle and accidents are taking places frequently in the city due to dilapidated condition. Sources said, three persons were killed and two other injured severely in a road accident at Nimtola area under Bondor thana in the port city Chittagong on Sunday.
The ill-fated victims were identified as Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Musa (50), Mohammad Wazed Ali Babul (45) and Mohammad Jashim Sikdar (38). Of the victims, Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain Musa and Mohammad Wazed Ali Babul were the passengers of a CNG run autos while Mohammad Jashim Sikdar was the driver.
Sources said, a speedy lorry loaded with containers fell on the taxi as the condition of the road were worst and the wheels of the lorry fell into a ditch at around 11 am on Nimtola Biswa Road. As a result, the ill fated three victims were killed on the spot and two others injured severely.
The locals and police recovered the bodies of the victim and sent the injured persons to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Most of the roads in the port city now become damaged due to the continuous raining in the current rainy season. Mayor of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) A J M Nasir Uddin claimed that the loss of the damaged roads might be more than Tk 500 crore.
Sources said, the CCC is the responsible organisation for renovating the roads. Now, the CCC is trying to fill up the cracks and potholes by the bitumen with small stones. The Superintendent Engineer of CCC Engineerr Rafiqul Islam said they are renovating the roads by “Ash Fault Plant” now. “We are using the bitumen with small stones to fill up the cracks and potholes of roads.”
He said as the raining is continuing almost every day, the CCC workers are using the bitumen with small stones to fill up the cracks and potholes of roads. But, after rain, the bitumen will wash away again. Meanwhile, Mayor of CCC Nasir Uddin said, 25 to 30 percent of the roads of the city were damaged in the current monsoon. The loss of the damaged roads might be more than Tk 500 crores.
He said presently, the projects of Tk 716 crore for renovation of roads, construction of bridges and culverts, ash fault plant projects of Tk 200 crore and canal digging projects of Tk 327 crore are going on. He hoped that after the rainy season, the roads of the city would be renovated and at that time the sufferings of the city dwellers might be removed.
It may be mentioned that the maximum vehicles are running with high risk on the roads as the condition of roads became worth in the rain. Big ditches, damaging of carpets and lack of renovation works and continuous downpour made the roads of the port very rough and risky. Most of the roads and alleys in the port city have become unfit for traffic due to cracks and potholes, causing sufferings to the pedestrians, commuters as well as the drivers.
