Maintaining total standardization of all consumers’ products stressed

Speakers at a discussion here Tuesday unequivocally called for maintaining total standardization of all consumers products to ensure sound public health.
They viewed substandard and adulterated consumer items always pose serious threat to the public health as well the entire society. So, there is no alternative to ensure total quality of the products.
Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institutions (BSTI) organized the discussion styled “Standards level the playing field” held at Nanking Darbar Hall in the city to mark the 45th World Standard Day-2014.
Professor Dr Mosharraf Hossain, Department Head of Industrial and Production Engineering of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology, and Professor Dr Selim Reja of Department of Marketing of Rajshahi University, addressed the discussion as the chief and special guests respectively with Engineer Abdul Hannan, Regional Office Head of BSTI, in the chair.
During his keynote presentation, Engineer Nurul Islam, Deputy Director (Materials) of BSTI, narrated the significance of the day alongside highlighting aspects of standardization of the consumer products.
Chief guest Prof Mosharraf Hossain stated that ensuring food safety alongside maintaining the hygiene factor has become indispensable as millions of citizens suffer from illness by eating contaminated and adulterated foods every year.
Hazardous food has been adjudged as a major threat to public health in Bangladesh, so emphasis should be given on adopting effective measures in this regard, they added.
Besides, they put emphasis on making the BSTI more strengthened to ensure the consumer goods safety and hygienic quality.
Prof Selim Reja stressed the need for proper enforcement of the consumers’ rights protection act for protecting the consumer’s right. He viewed that the consumers feel insecure in every sphere of life, especially in the retail markets and are deprived of quality services.
He mentioned that the international standards facilitate everybody’s access to product, structures and services which include safety considerations, ergonomics and harmonized test methods.
Besides, standards also provide a platform for the dissemination of technological innovations. “Development cannot be attained and confidence can never be created without standards as well as International Standards”, he added.
