BSS, Rajshahi :
Ensuring social justice and improvement of living and livelihood conditions of the marginalized and other less-income group people can be the vital means of protecting and promoting their human rights besides mainstreaming them everywhere in the society.
They should be given equal access to their fundamental rights of land, food, shelter, healthcare, education and culture together with full-filling other requisite demands for the sake of balance development of the nation side by side with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The views were expressed by some political and professional leaders and development activists at a seminar titled “Human Rights of Marginalized Populations: Our Roles and Responsibilities to improve the situation” at Nanking Darbar Hall in the city on Tuesday.
More than 85 people representing cross-sections of professions, communities and stakes joined the meeting.
Five development organizations- Pollisree, DASCOH Foundation, Manab Kollyan Parishad, Research Initiative Bangladesh and NETZ Partnership for Development and Justice- jointly hosted the seminar-cum-view-sharing meeting.
They are jointly implementing a three and half years project styled “Promotion of Social Partnership for Empowerment of marginalized communities in six districts and at national level in Bangladesh (PROSPECT)” aimed at strengthening human rights defenders and public authorities to protect and promote the rights of marginalized communities.
Chairman of Indigenous Affairs Parliamentary Caucus Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, addressed the meeting as chief guest, while former pro-vice-chancellor of Rajshahi University Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan spoke as special guest with DASCOH Foundation Chief Executive Officer Akramul Haque in the chair.
Additional Superintendent of Police Ifte Khayer Alam, Deputy Director of Department of Social Services Hasina Momtaz, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat and Director of NETZ Bangladesh Shahidul Islam also spoke.
Professor and Chairman Dr Abdul Hannan of the Department of Law in Rajshahi University presented a keynote paper illustrating the issue.
He also put forward a set of recommendations for establishing social justice towards the marginalized and plain land ethnic communities through removing all sorts of disparities.
Lawmaker Badsha said mainstream people’s support is vital for protection of rights of the marginalized and ethnic minority people. Human rights movement will not succeed unless fundamental needs of the disadvantaged and less-income and ethnic groups are addressed first, he added.
He called on the concerned authority to come up with immediate steps to prevent the encroachment on the lands of the underprivileged people.
Badsha said the mainstream people should protect the rights of the minority groups and there should be a harmony between the mainstream people and the minority ethnic groups.
