Mahmudur`s bail order upheld

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld a High Court order that granted bail to detained acting editor of the daily Amar Desh Mahmudur Rahman in a case filed for alleged attempt to abduct and
 murder Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
His lawyer Tanveer Ahmed Al Amin said to the journalists that there is no bar to Mahmudur Rahman’s release from jail following the SC order.
A five-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha upheld his bail after dismissing a petition filed by the government seeking a stay on the High Court order.
Advocate A J Mohammad Ali and Advocate Tanveer Ahmed Al Amin represented Mahmudur Rahman in the court while acting Attorney General Murad Reza stood for the state.
Following a bail petition filed by Mahmudur, the High Court on September 7 granted him permanent bail in the case. Later, the government submitted the petition to the Appellate Division challenging the HC order.
On September 18, the Supreme Court stayed the High Court order of bail till October 30 and sent the government’s stay petition to the Appellate Division’s full bench for its hearing.
After holding hearing on the petition, the apex court bench dismissed the government petition on Monday.
Mahmudur Rahman, a journalist and a former energy advisor, has been behind bars since April 11, 2013. He was shown arrested in more than 70 cases and secured bail in all the cases.
