Sport Desk: Mahmudullah Riyad and Mushfiqur Rahim made a highest-ever World Cup partnership for Bangladesh to set a 276-run target for England in the 33rd match of Pool A clash at the Adelaide Oval on Monday. Bangladesh scored 275 runs for seven wickets after they were sent to bat first. Riyad became the first Bangladesh batsman to score a World Cup century when he took a single off Stuart Broad’s 3rd delivery of 44th over. The 29 year right hand batsman reached his maiden ODI century off 131 balls hitting 7 fours and 2 sixes. He was run out adding more 3 runs at the career-best 103. Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim added 141 runs in the 5th wicket partnership which is highest-ever World Cup partnership for Bangladesh in any wicket. Mushfiqur Rahim who bagged his 23rd half century scored 89 runs off 77 balls with 8 fours and 1 six. Earlier, England won the toss and invited Bangladesh to bat first. At the beginning, tigers lost two openers Tamim Iqbal (2) and Imrul Kayes (2). However, Mahmudullah and Soumya Sarkar rebuilt the innings slowly but Soumya Sarkar was out when team`s run was 94 in 20.3 overs. The duo added 86 runs in the third wicket partnership. Country’s ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was the fourth man to get back to the pavilion scoring only 2 runs. Imrul Kayes, called into the Bangladesh squad in recent days as a replacement for the injured Anamul Haque, came straight into the side as an opener. Bangladesh sought to exploit England`s poor record as players of spin by including another specialist spinner – the left-armer Arafat Sunny – ahead of Nasir Hossain. For England, Alex Hales finally won an opportunity at No. 3 – quite a challenge to come in for his first game of the tournament in a must-win game – in place of Gary Ballance, who had laboured at the top of the order. Chris Jordan came in for Steven Finn as England lost faith that he might rediscover the hostility that had once made him one of the most promising young fast bowlers in the world. A win for Bangladesh will secure their last-eight berth, England will fly home after they complete the formalities in its last encounter against Afghanistan. On the other hand, England need to win both their two remaining Group A games (the other is against Afghanistan) to have a chance of progressing to the quarter-final. Bangladesh have won two of the last three ODI matches between the sides, including their last meeting in the 2011 World Cup. Bangladesh may well look to exploit a familiar England failing – a weakness against spin – while England look set to continue with a four-man pace attack and demand a fuller length from their bowlers in search of swing.
