Staff Reporter :
Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of former principal of Eden Mohila College Mahfuza Chowdhury Parvin.
The suspects are Runu, who supplied domestic helps, and Swapna, one of the housemaids of Mahfuza’s house, said Maruf Hossain Sarder, Deputy Commissioner of Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said at a press briefing on Friday.
“Police have arrested them for killing the ex-principal. They took away victim’s mobile phone after the murder. We suspect that the murder took place in a planned way for looting jewellery and money,” he added.
Maruf Hossain Sarder further said, police are also looking for other motives behind the killing. “We are doing everything to arrest and prosecute if others are involved in the murder.”
Runu alias Rakib’s mother was arrested from Mirpur, while Swapna alias Rita Akhter, was arrested from Madan area of Netrakona early on Friday.
“A gold chain and Tk 7,000 were recovered from Swapna,” said Maruf Hossain Sarder.
However, Reshma alias Ruma, another housemaid accused in the Mahfuza murder, was absconding.
Swapna and Reshma gave false addresses during their work at Mahfuza’s house. Even both of them erased their pictures and addresses written in the diary of Mahfuza after her murder. So, police faced great difficulty to arrest Swapna.
“Several police teams are working to arrest Reshma,” said Maruf Hossain Sarder, adding, “The criminals in the initial interrogation admitted their involvement in the murder.” “The investigation is still in the primary stage. Two of the arrested accused are being interrogated,” said Maruf Hossain.
Mahfuza Chowdhury Parvin, 65, a Social Science Professor who was the principal of the Eden Mohila College from February 2009 to April 2012, was strangled at her own house in the capital’s Elephant Road on February 11 when her husband Ismat Quadir Gama was not at home. Police primarily suspected two of Mahfuza’s housemaids, who had been working at her house for one and a half months.
