National Swimming Championship: Mahfuza makes SAF record

Bangladesh Navy swimmer Mahfuza Khatun Sheela made new SAF record in the Women’s 50-meter breaststroke on the 3rd day of the four-day RMM Group 27th National Swimming Championship at the newly constructed Gopalganj Swimming Pool and Gymnasium Complex on Wednesday.
She covered the distance with a timing of 34.85 seconds (hand timing) to better SAF record of 34.97 seconds made by Sri Lankan swimmer Rahim Maiyami in 2006 as well as to improve previous national mark of 35.21 seconds by Ansar swimmer Dolly Akhter in 2010.
Three more records were made on the 3rd day of the meet, all in women’s events — 50-meter breaststroke, 50-meter butterfly and 4X200-meter freestyle relay.
With the day’s feat, a total of 13 national records were created in the first three days of the four-day meet.
Apart from Mahfuza Khatun’s SAF record, another Navy swimmer Nazma Khatun set up new national mark in the women’ s 50 meter butterfly clocking 31.73 seconds to improve the old mark of 31.96 mad
e by Papiya Akhter of BKSP in 2013.
Bangladesh Navy swimming team of Nazma, Sonia, Mahfuza and Lima created new national record in 4X200 meter freestyle relay with a timing of 10:02.30 to better the old mark of 10:15.63 by BKSP swimmers in 2008.
After the 3nd day (Wednesday), Bangladesh Navy top the list securing 20 gold, eight silver and 11 bronze medals, Bangladesh Army were in distant 2nd with nine gold, 16 silver and 11 bronzes while Bangladesh Ansar were in the 3rd place with three and and four bronze medals.
