Mahananda erosion takes serious turn in C’nawabganj

The erosion of the river Mohananda has taken a very serious turn and it has devoured at least 50 residential houses at Sundarpur union under Chapainawabganj sadar upazila during the last few days.
Besides, a mosque, mango orchards covering several hundred bighas of land and bamboo bushes also went into the river by the erosion, local sources said.
50 more houses have also come under the treat of erosion as the erosion has been taking place along three kilometres area, the sources added.
Others have been shifting their dwelling houses to the nearby places and have been taking shelter on other people’s land. They have been also trying to check erosion locally by placing bamboo fences along the bank but all their efforts are going in vain.
Meanwhile officials of the Water Developmnent Board (WDB) visited the spot but they are yet to take any measure to check the erosion, the sources added.
Towhidul Islam, an inhabitant of Dewantola of the union said, the ertosion started around 20 years ago in the area but it autometically stopped a few years ago and this year at the recesion of flood water around a week ago the river suddenly became furious.
Erosion victims Eltaj, Belal, Abdus Samad, Alam, Ekramul, Michu Mondal, Momin, Babu, Raghu and Tariqul informed that their houses have gone under the rivver basin during the last few days’ erosion and they did not get any time to shift their belongings.
