Magura gun theft accused killed in ‘gunfight’

A listed criminal, who was arrested over police firearm theft, was killed in a “gunfight” between police and his cohorts early Sunday in Shalikha upazila of Magura.
The deceased was identified as Rajib Biswas, son of late Abdul Jalil.
Jihadul Kabir, Superintendent of Magura Police confirmed the death to The New Nation.
He said, Raju was arrested from Simakhali area of the upazila on Saturday night for his involvement in the theft of a Chinese made submachine gun (SMG) from police possession during election duty at Ghobra Primary School polling station in Shalikha upazila early Thursday.
According to Raju’s statement, police recovered the stolen SMG near Raju’s house on Saturday night, he said. Later, police conducted a drive along with Raju in the same area to nab other criminals. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Raju’s cohorts fired gunshots at the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back which triggered a gunfight. Raju was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, he said.
Police recovered two pipe guns, six rounds of bullets from the spot. There were eight cases filed against Rajib, Shalikha police station Officer-in-Charge Biplab Kumar Nath said.
Rajib was an alleged member of Tota Group, an extremist organisation, he added.
The body was sent to Magura Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
