A student died in clashes between two groups at a madrasa centering over calling to Maghrib prayer in the city’s Mohammadpur early Monday.
The deceased, identified as Mofazzal Hossain, 17, was a tenth grader at Quaderia Tayabia Alia Kamil Madrasah in the capital. Mofazzal is son of Abul Kashem of East
Putiapar in Motlab upazila of Chandpur district.
Class IX students Tanvir Ahmed, Arif Hossain, Emdad Hossain and Afzal Foysal and a tenth grader Azizul Hoque were injured during the clash, police said.
“A clash erupted between ninth graders and tenth graders at the madrasa. Mofazzal was brought to hospital as he suffered head injuries during the clash,” said Jamal Uddin Meer, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohammadpur Police Station, quoting madrasa authorities and students.
Some tenth graders were taunted when they went to the madrasa hostel to call class IX students to evening prayers on Saturday. The same groups clashed the next day after dinner.
The injured were taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital first. Mofzzal’s condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the on duty doctors declared him dead around 6:00am on Monday, the OC said.
Kazi Abdul Alim Rizvi, Principal of the madrasa, said, “We shifted the two units to separate buildings to avoid further clashes.”
As the chaos unfolded, Mofazzal went missing. After searching everywhere, he was found inside a common bathroom on the first floor which was locked from inside, he claimed.
A classmate of Mofazzal wishing not to be named has claimed, “Teachers were lying to cover up their ‘faults’. The claim that he was found inside a toilet is not correct.”
