Sylhet Bureau :
Lower-grade government employees of field administrations in Sylhet continued their work abstention across the country on Thursday for the third consecutive day pressing for promotion and upgrading of posts.
The work abstention brought routine activities to a halt at the offices of divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, upazila nirbahi officers and assistant commissioners (land).
As on the previous day, office assistants joined demonstrations in the morning after giving their attendances at 9:00am at the UNO and AC (Land) offices at upazila headquarters, district collectorate offices and divisional commissioners’ offices.
Under the banner of Bangladesh Collectorate Assistant Association, the field-level government employees brought out processions on the office compounds and staged sit-ins during office hours from 9:00am to 5:00pm in Sylhet and other places.
Bangladesh Collectorate Assistant Association Sylhet president Kamruzzaman told that collectorate assistants and other lowergrade employees continued the work abstention for the second day as part of the 24-day protest programme to press the demands for upgrading the non-cadre posts at the field-level administrations, mainly at the offices of the divisional commissioners and DC offices.
He said, they were in talks with the higher authorities over the issue. We will continue the protest programme till our demands are realised, he added.
People who went to the offices returned disappointed as they found no employee to assist them. Gias Uddin, a resident of Jokiganj area, told that he went to the DC office at about 11:00am but found no employees there.
Alimuzzaman, the secretary of Bangladesh Collectorate Assistant Association, Sylhet, said that they continued the work abstention as the authority was yet to make any decision.
