Low-paid women work at tobacco factories in Rangpur

Staff Reporter :Many poor women having no other options of work have engaged themselves in tobacco processing factories at Uttam under Sadar Upazila in Rangpur district. They work from 8:00am to 4:00 pm daily but their wage is Tk 100 only.While visiting Husna Tobacco (Pvt) Limited at Uttam in the Sadar area, more than 80 women were found there. They were processing the tobacco leaves under the sun in an unhygienic condition. Experts say, they have been working in unhygienic condition and tobacco related factories caused various diseases including cancer and bronchitis. The female workers said, if we do not work in the tobacco factories, we with our family members shall starve.
