UNB, Munshiganj :
Angry locals staged demonstrations in Gazaria upazila on Friday demanding capital punishment of the killers of a local UP chairman and the withdrawal of the police super and the OC concerned.
Shamsuddin Pradhan, 65, chairman of Baluakandi union parishad and president of the union unit of Awami League, was hacked to death during a clash between the supporters of AL-backed candidate Amirul Islam and AL rebel candidate Refayetullah Khan Tota at a polling station during the upazila polls in Gazaria on March 23.
Witnesses said the angry locals took to the street and blocked Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Baluakandi around 11am to press for their demands, creating a long tailback.
The demonstrators identified Tota as the mastermind of the killing and demanded capital punishment to all the killers. They also chanted slogans against the Munshiganj SP and the officer-in-charge of Gazaria Police Station for their failure to arrest the killers of the UP chairman.
Later, they withdrew the blockade after one and half an hours following intervention by the administration, Bhaberchar police camp in-charge Saiful Islam told UNB.
