The repairing work of Khasrupur-Pailanpur road in Osmaninagar Upazila Sylhet under Second Rural Transport Improvement Project has been protested over using low-grade brick chips. Locals made the allegation over the brick pickets used in repairing the road. Residents of the area have also been facing serious public health hazard due to annoying dust and sand.
At the end of 2019, the contracting firm named ‘M/s Cosmo Construction’ got the tender worth of Tk 4 crores to repair the road under the supervision of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED). But due to the delay in repairing the road, the locals and pedestrians have been facing a dire situation as the work wasn’t completed within in due time.
Even no official from the contracting firm or LGED was appointed to oversee the road works. Only workers and ruler drivers are working there.
When Sub-Assistant Engineer Mosharraf Hossain was phoned over mobile, he didn’t respond.
Contacted, Balaganj Upazila Engineer (LGED) SRMG Zakaria told that if substandard brick chips are used, actions will be taken against the contracting firm.
The civil society of the Osmaninagar upazila said, “Though the renovation work of this road has started after a long struggle, we are disappointed because of using low-grade brick chips. We urged the authorities concerned to take stern actions by investigating the matter immediately.”
