A local unit Awami League President and UP member was shot dead by miscreants on Sunday night. His son Ibrahim (18) was shot in the leg at that time.
The deceased was identified as Nur Ali Sheik, 50 son of Ebrahim Ali of Shubhara village of Abhaynagar upazila of Jashore district. He was the member of Shubhra Union Parishad of the upazila.
Police and witnesses said Awami League leader Nur Ali and his son were returning to the village on a motorcycle from Nawapara, an industrial town in Abhaynagar.
Son Ibrahim was riding the motorcycle. When they reached Babuhat of their union at around 10.45 pm, some miscreants stopped the motorcycle and fired them. Nur Ali was dead on the spot. His son has been admitted to Fultala Upazila Health Complex in Khulna.
The killing was carried out by members of his party ahead of the upcoming UP elections. Meanwhile, the police have taken three people into custody on suspicion of being involved in the incident.
Abhaynagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Moniruzzaman said the UP member was shot dead at Babubazar in Shubhra Union. Multiple teams of police have been dispatched to the spot. However, the police suspect that the killing may have been due to personal enmity.
