S. A Shofiee, Sylhet :
Life of people in Sylhet comprising Gulapgonj, Beanibazar and fronter Upazila Zakigonj has been paralysed owing to load-shedding and power-outage even 9/10 times a day resulting in throwing more or less 1,25,000 consumers under whom 7-8 lakh people at bay.
For this type of immense suffering, anguish have developed in all consumer’s mind. Although, there is a little bit less suffering in municipal areas of Zakigonj, Golapgonj and Beanibazar UZ headquarters, the situation has been going bad to worse at out-skirts of municipal areas, says a UP member, on condition of anonymity.
Absence of power supply for 8-10 hours has become a regular phenomenon there. Even 12 hours or more absence of power supply has been occurring in many areas. Not only that, negligence of duty practised by Rural Electrification Board i.e Polly Biddut Samity is also a regular affair, particularly in Zakigonj and Beanibazar upazilas.
It has been learnt from Power Development Board (PDB) source that the power supply has been continued on 33 KV line on which load has become sometimes double or treble and the demand and consumption have been increasing in all those upazilas day by day.
Beanibazar Upazila, which is an expatriate-studded one has its infra structural development goes leaps and bounds, for which uninterrupted power supply is essential.
Meanwhile, processions, meetings, sit-in demonstration and road blockade types of action programmes have been inforce, particularly in Gulapgonj, Zakigonj and Beanibazar upazilas.
It has been learnt further that in 1985, the 20-megawatt power turbine has been constructed at Kumargaon to mitigate power supply in Sylhet. After words 90 megawatt power project at Fenchugonj has been installed.
But 33 KV lines have not been replaced by higher transmission lines for Gulapgonj, Dhaka Dakshmin, Beanibazar and Zakigonj upazilas so far.
So, higher transmission lines and installation of identical power distributing transformers should be installed, says an insider of the PDB, on condition of anonymity.
The half-century old transmission lines are to be replaced soon for the uninterrupted power supply. Some thought that after Summer days, there will be an improvement in power supply, but the irony of fate is that no such improvement of power supply is yet to be visible.
