About nine farmers including a teenager girl were killed and six others injured in lightning in Ullapara upazila of Sirajganj district on Thursday afternoon.
Ullapara Upazilla Nirbhahi Officer (UNO) Uzzal Hossain and Panchkroshi Union Parishad chairman Touhidul Islam Feroz confirmed the matter.
The deceased were identified as Mokam Hossain, 60, Monnaf Hossain,18, Shamsher Ali,62, Shahin ,32, Akter Hossain ,60, of Shibpur village, and Abdul Quddus, 60, and Shah Alam, 42, Ritu Khatun, 14,from Matikora village in the upazila.
Panchkroshi Union Parishad Chairman Touhidul Islam Feroz said in the afternoon, the farmers were planting saplings in a agriculture land near Matikora Dakshinpara village.
“They took shelter in a small house beside the field when rain started. But they could not survive tragic death. All on a sudden death appeared and unfortunate six farmers died on the spot and six other injured as they were struck by lightning,” he said. Other three died in the hospital, Chairman added.
Being informed, members of Fire Service rescued the injured and took them to Ullapara Upazila Health Complex. Ullapara Model Thana Sub-Inspector Masud Rana said from the incident spot that we rushed to the spot and saw six people lying dead on the spot. We are trying to calm the bereaved families. We mourn the death.
UNO Uzzal Hossain said we have visited the incident place and spoke with the families. Upazilla administration has granted Tk 25, 000 for each family and dead bodies were handed to the family.
