A salt-laden lighter vessel sank near Parky Beach at the estuary of Karnaphuli river yesterday.
Water Transport Cell (WTC), lighter vessel controlling agent, sources said the lighter vessel “MV Nafis” carrying 200 tons of salt got stuck in a hidden river bed at the estuary of Karnaphuli river near Parky Beach on its way to Dhaka around 11am.
The vessel started sinking in the river water as its bottom got leaked, the sources said adding that the crew of the vessel swam ashore safely. Sinking of the lighter vessel, however, did not cause any problem for the port traffic, Chittagong port sources said.
