Life unprotected in city

AS per reports in national dailies, a man was killed on Monday while trying to save his grown up daughter from being attacked by miscreants in Narayanganj in open daylight. The poor father died on the spot. In another incident a worker died at Moghbazar flyover construction site after an iron rod fell on his head killing him instantly in an overcrowded street. Both incidents showed they were victims in unusual circumstances where protection to life and rule of law failed to save them. The worker died of employers’ neglect while the girl’s father died because the law enforcers were otherwise busy to toll collection and protecting political leaders which seems to be their only job now, besides chasing people who are opposed to the government.
In Narayanganj, miscreants stabbed the father of the teenage girl to death when he tried to save his 17-year-old daughter from miscreants who attempted to abduct her from the father’s custody. The teen age girl was also travelling with the father. Local people handed over the gang leaders with his accompanies to police but the gang leaders managed to escape.
It poses the question whether police let the criminal flee away because he may be local ruling party men or was it due to police inefficiency. People who witnessed the incidence made angry protest but the fact remained whether or not police will verify the incident and put the miscreant to trial. Such lawlessness is only pushing the country to greater chaos. The Moghbazar incident showed that the construction firm is not using proper protective shield including headgear while working in construction site. It is total disregard to people’s safety. Even general public safety measures like enclosures, scaffolding and fencing the site are ignored at the construction site, leaving thousands of people passing by the site everyday in total vulnerability of their life. Employers are not following the safety manual designed for the major project and there is nobody to press for the compliance of the safety measures. Now that the man is dead nobody will also take accountability while the family lost the earning member to feed others.
The incidents explicitly indicate that constitutional guaranties about right to life, safety and security are applicable only for a few people at the upper echelons of the society. Ordinary people are subject to follow the laws but not to claim protection of the law. This country is not for a certain select group of people but rather for all, but a small group of people are enjoying all facilities while the killers also enjoy impunity because they are powerful. In our view the rule of law must be applicable for all and the government be accountable to the people to try the criminals who have killed the man. The employer of the workers should equally be held responsible and compensate for the life.
