LGD, Defence Ministry ink MoU over setting up weather stations

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between Local Government Division (LGD) and Defence Ministry on using land of Upazila Parishads for setting up agriculture based automatic weather station at 200 upazilas across the country. LGD Senior Secretary SM Ghulam Farooque and Secretary of the Defence Ministry Akhter Hussain Bhuiya signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides at a function at the conference room of LGD here on Tuesday afternoon, said an official release.
Local Government, Rural Development (LGRD) and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam and State Minister Swapan Bhattacharjee and other officials concerned were present in the MoU signing ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, Tazul Islam said availability of region based weather update will speed up the economic activities of the country. “Specially, we would be benefited utilizing the weather update in agriculture sector,” he added.
The agriculture based Automatic Weather Station (Ag-AWS) will be set up at 200 upazilas across the country under the project ‘Strengthening Meteorological Information Services and Early Warning Systems (Component-A)’.
The project, funded by the World Bank (WB), is expected to be implemented by June 2021 under the Defence Ministry.
